Forgiven (2002)
PLOT SUMMARY

Mr. Jenkins is a resident of the Pineview Nursing Home when he suffers a severe stroke, leaving him partially paralyzed and speechless. Shot from his point of view, this film takes place almost entirely from Mr. Jenkins hospital bed, and while the audience never sees him, Mr. Jenkins' life unfolds over the course of the film through visits from a variety of visitors, both real and imagined.

As a young man, Mr. Jenkins was a husband and father of three children: Carl, Kim, and Beth. At age seven, Beth dies, leaving Jenkins heart-hardened and emotional barren. His emotional absence alienates him from his family, resulting in divorce and estrangement from his two surviving children. He seeks solace in the arms of strangers, but never again opens his heart, allowing real love back into his life.

In his hospital bed, Jenkins is visited by visions of Carl as a young teen being rejected by his father, of Kim as a young adult struggling with her life and the death of her mother, of Beth and his ex-wife on their death beds, and by two mysterious “guests:” Brian, the paramedic and Clarissa, the night nurse.

He is also visited by Beth whose presence signifies the old man's only chance of salvation from dying alone. But first he must let her in. He must ultimately forgive himself and allow the love which he shut off from himself so many years ago to once again enter his hardened heart.
